What's the Deal With Hemp?
July 26th, 2018
What’s the deal with Hemp? Is it legal? Is hemp the same as marijuana? These are the questions we’ve all probably asked at one stage with hemp seeds quickly gaining popularity. Hemp comes from the cannabis plant species, but it’s a separate plant to marijuana. In November 2017, Australian laws changed to allow the sale of low-THC hemp seeds for consumption. THC refers to tetrahydrocannabinol which is the active chemical in cannabis that gives it it’s psychological effects. Food grade hemp needs to contain less than 0.5% of THC (which naturally occurs in the plant). This means that whilst you might feel pretty good after your smoothie bowl sprinkled with hemp seeds you won’t get high off it (sorry guys!).
Hemp seeds are naturally high in protein, containing about 25% protein. Some say that hemp is one of the best vegan protein sources because it contains such a high ratio of protein to weight, and also because it contains other essential amino acids and fibre. Hemp protein is a whole food source as it goes through minimal processing. Unlike many other protein sources, it’s raw and doesn’t go through any heat processing. The seeds are crushed to remove the oil and then the remaining substance is ground into a fine powder.
Hemp naturally contains over 20 amino acids, including nine of the essential amino acids which help repair and build muscles. Hemp seeds are also rich in soluble and insoluble fibre, which is essential for healthy digestion. Hemp seeds contain omega three, six and nine, and these fatty acids appear in the perfect ratio for maintaining health and wellbeing.
Prana On have recently launched their Tribal Force Protein, featuring hemp. It’s certified vegan and high in protein, fibre and digestive enzymes. It also includes Sacha Inchi, another superfood seed high in protein and omega 3. Tribal Force is a great tasting, totally plant based protein option that delivers high protein with added recovery and repair benefits.
